Giant Rat’s Tail Grass (GRT) continues to be a significant weed management challenge for landholders across Queensland. Its ability to spread rapidly and maintain a persistent seed bank means controlling an infestation can require more than simply treating the plants you can see.
Granular Products National Sales and Marketing Manager Ross Norman was invited to speak directly with landholders about these challenges at the TOPX Roma event and Tiaro Field Day, where weed management was a key focus.
At Tiaro, Ross joined FCRC’s Andrew Hatch on a Weed Management Q&A panel facilitated by BMRG’s Lucas Kerkow. While the discussion covered a range of invasive weeds, GRT was a major talking point, reflecting the growing concern surrounding the weed across the Wide Bay region.
Why is GRT so difficult to manage?
One of the biggest challenges with GRT is its persistent seed bank. Even after established plants have been treated, new plants can continue to emerge from seed already present in the soil.
This means effective management needs to look beyond the plants visible in the paddock today. Controlling existing plants while managing new germination is an important part of breaking the cycle and preventing plants from reaching maturity and replenishing the seed bank.

Around 10 to 15 landholders stayed behind to discuss their individual properties and the weed management challenges they were experiencing.
The conversations reinforced just how significant GRT is across the region, while highlighting that many landholders either don't have the time or aren't sure where to start when it comes to managing an established infestation.
